The Church of the Compagnia del Santissimo Crocifisso
Situated in the heart of Castiglion Fibocchi, this charming church is deeply rooted in local history. Originally owned by the Dei family, it was later donated to the parish and designated as the home of the “Compagnia del Santissimo Crocifisso”.
The building is simple and intimate, showcasing a modest, rustic architectural style highlighted by a square entrance topped by a window. Inside, the plastered and elegantly painted single nave is enriched with commemorative plaques and a delicate statue of the Madonna. At the spiritual heart of the church stands the altar, set against the back wall, which supports an exquisitely crafted wooden crucifix from the 16th century—recently restored to its original splendor through careful conservation.
In 2010, the entire complex underwent a meticulous restoration led by local restorer Rossana Parigi. This extensive project was made possible thanks to the generous participation of the confraternity members, the financial support of the local community, and, above all, the deep dedication of the parish priest and corrector, Don Adriano Ralli.
A pivotal contribution also came from devoted female members, notably Anna and Mirella, who restored numerous sacred furnishings under the guidance of the restorer and organized several exhibitions.
Among the church’s treasures is a rare Passion Cross attributed to the monk Baldassarre Audiberti, famously known as “the saint of the crosses” (refer to Santino Gallorini’s book). Completing its rich heritage is an impressive collection of lanterns and large processional lamps, eighteenth-century caged crosses, a Madonna of the Passion, and a depiction of the Dead Christ with his stretcher—all works of significant devotional and historical value, many of which have also been recently restored.
