Church of San Pietro in Pezzano
Surrounded by an area still characterized by agricultural and artisanal activity, the Church of San Pietro in Pezzano stands at the strategic crossroads between the modern provincial road Setteponti and the ancient Via Vecchia Aretina. This intersection of historic routes—already in use in ancient times—naturally became the site of a sacred building intended to serve travelers and rural communities. The church was consecrated in 1232 and initially depended on the parish of San Quirico Sopr’Arno, from which it later inherited the baptismal font and key religious functions.
In 1583, it was entrusted to the Confraternity of the Annunciation, and during the 18th century, it was temporarily used as a burial site. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the building underwent significant restoration by architect Giuseppe Castellucci, one of the leading figures in preserving the historic and artistic heritage of the Arezzo area.
Inside, the church houses a 14th-century fresco of the Annunciation, attributed to Andrea di Nerio, a painter trained in the circle of Taddeo Gaddi and among the key figures in spreading the Giottesque style in the Arezzo region. Although partially damaged, the fresco stands out for its emotional intensity and the elegance of its drapery, gestures, and the expressions of the angel and the Virgin, who are captured in a moment of silent dialogue that conveys deep and measured spirituality.
Now incorporated into the municipal cemetery, the church is not always open to visitors—it is accessible only during special celebrations. Nevertheless, it remains a symbolic landmark for the local community, a testament to the historical and spiritual continuity of a landscape that, with its olive groves, farmhouses, and hills, still reflects the rural soul of the Valdarno.
